Location

Ranong is located on the Kra Isthmus, the narrow strip that connects mainland Thailand with the Malay Peninsula on the west side of the Phuket mountain range. It has a long coast on the Andaman Sea. The province is the least populated province of Thailand. 80% of the area is covered by forests and 67% is mountainous terrain. The project is located i n a vast area of virgin mountainous rain forest near Baan Talae Nork, just 80 kms south of Ranong city. Full time staffs with help from volunteers run the project on a day-to-day basis, linking with the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project at Phuket, which is just 3 hours away.

Project Life

The centre is home to many wild species common to Thailand such as gibbons, macaques, slow loris, porcupine and civet cats that are in need of welfare and protection, especially the Primates. Some species have already been relocated here and additionally the site will also be used for the relocation of infected gibbons from the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket. Moreover, another main goal is to provide a sustainable program with a lasting impact by means of an education program in wildlife and conservation. It is crucial to the future success of this centre that the beliefs and behaviour of the local communities are changed. Volunteers work includes food preparation, cleaning of cages, assisting in general animal welfare and data collection for animals. Development of the site is ongoing and volunteers are required to become involved in whatever stage of the project is being progressed during their stay. Additionally suitable volunteers will be included in our education programs to local as well. An open-minded flexible attitude is a definite requirement for all volunteers.

Volunteers work a six-day week usually for 8 hours per day.
