Volunteering to assist with disabled children is a valuable and worthwhile way to spend your time overseas. Since 1993 The Special School in Phuket has provided a safe and educational haven for disabled, autistic and deaf children from the ages six to 21. |

The school aims to provide the children with a caring and stimulating environment to help them to reach their full potential. The school also boasts a life skills and occupational centre to help the children prepare for life after the school. There are 270 children who stay at the school from five provinces, cared for by a dedicated team of staff who require additional assistance with caring for and teaching the children from kindergarten to secondary level.

Upon arrival, our local coordinator will introduce you to the staff at the centre, show you to your room and make sure that you are settled in and shown around. You will be assisting a teacher in the classroom ensuring that the children receive the attention that they need. You can choose to work with autistic, deaf or mentally impaired children, depending on your preferences. Classes include life skills, art, occupational training, bakery, sports, educational and developmental play and you are welcome to join each class. The school is well equipped with modern facilities for the children’s medical and educational needs. Weekends are free for independent travel, however the school remains open and you can help organise games and sports with the children who live at the school.

The school is located in the northern district of Thalang, on Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, on the stunning Andaman Coast. The island is Thailand’s premiere tourist destination. However the school itself is located near a quiet, undeveloped beach and is only a 20 minute drive from picturesque P huket town. For those volunteers who want to explore the island’s beaches, public buses connect the school to the rest of the island. There are several small shops near the school, and the school has bicycles that volunteers are welcome to use during their stay.

The school provides simple yet clean and comfortable accommodation within the school. Volunteers will have a bed, pillow, blanket and fan. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided at the school and you will eat with staff or the children at the specified times. You will have access to drinking water and coffee. You will have to pay for any meals taken outside of the school, though Thailand is notoriously cheap and it is quite possible to eat a good meal for a pound!
