The project is based in the Cape Town area, giving you the opportunity to experience all that this cosmopolitan city has to offer.
Taking part in the 8-week plus programme, you will have the opportunity participate at each of the following projects or specialise in just one if you feel that that is where your strengths lie.
Caring for babies with HIV / AIDS
HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence, and this project offers babies a chance to be a child and grow up to be a healthy, productive adult. Working at this 18-bed palliative care centre you will see miracle recoveries happen. When a child is discharged from the care centre, the parents or carer are trained to provide on-going care at home.
Hope Schools
These are registered special-needs schools focusing specifically on rehabilitating former street children or children from abusive homes. Due to adverse circumstances, these young people have missed a substantial amount of their education and could be 3 years older than the other learners in their class in mainstream schooling. Typically, they struggle with anger management and have authority issues, and have been exposed to violence, sexual abuse and drug use on the streets. It is incredibly rewarding to be involved with this project, as in between all the challenging behaviour you will suddenly encounter a breakthrough as a young person opens his/her heart to you. Volunteers with TEFL as well as any teaching experience are much sought after as these young people usually have problems with literacy and numeracy.

The exciting thing about Journey Hope is that you have the chance to work on various projects within the programme, so no two days are the same. Expect to work approximately 5 – 8 hours a day. Sometimes this will be Monday to Friday, at other times you will be asked to work over the weekends.
Other international volunteers may also be participating on the project and living in the area. The majority of your evenings will be free for you to enjoy the company of other volunteers and if you choose, to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife of Cape Town.
During your initial orientation, accommodation is provided in a hostel with the other volunteers. Then for the rest of your programme, you have the option of:
- Host Family: There are options to live with a host family, where you play an active role in the household, giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in South African culture. Meals are provided.
- Volunteer House Accommodation in a trendy part of Cape Town close to city centre, making it easier to go out at night. Highly recommended for party people and independent travelers. Accommodation will include self service breakfast, evening meals prepared for you, regular cleaning of the house and laundry services. Twin and dorm rooms are available (12 beds per dorm).
