Ghana has the well-deserved reputation of being one of the friendliest countries on the planet. Steeped in history, culturally diverse, stunning coastlines, savannah and rainforest make Ghana a fascinating place for volunteering. We are currently expanding all operations in Ghana due to the success of this volunteer building programme in Africa.

There are normally several construction projects on the go at once ranging from building brand new learning centres from scratch, to helping update existing sites, tasks such as running in power supplies (both solar and electric) and general renovation work are all possible during the project.

If you are a fully qualified brick layer or plumber, or just want to lend a hand and don't mind getting your hands dirty then this worthwhile project is for you.

We are also interested in hearing from architects, civil engineers, etc. as there are also building project management opportunities for those who can spare the time. Ex Armed Forces also seem to do well on this volunteer building programme and we can cater for groups or individuals.

The village of Besease, home to approximately 2000 people, sits snugly in the bush 3km from the main road to Accra. In contrast to its larger, bustling neighbour Kissi, Besease is a peaceful farming community with rich green farmland in every direction.

Despite being almost able to see from one side of the community to the other, Besease boasts a school, a couple of small food shops, a market, a large community building and a famous Abosomfie shrine. It is a 6 minute taxi ride to the junction on the main road or a 15 minute walk to Kissi where there are several shops and bars.

Brenu Akyinim is a small costal community with approximately 1000 inhabitants. Being close to the beach, the area sees tourists passing through, yet retains a rural African feel. The closest towns to the east are Elmina (10kms), then Cape Coast (20kms) that offer an array of shops, banks, hospitals, bars and restaurants. Both Elmina and Cape Coast were the departure points during the slave trading era, and today you can visit the forts and castles that held the slaves prisoner before they were shipped off to the Americas and Europe.

There are numerous national parks in Ghana worth a visit, and just to the north is Kakum National Park, where you can take a tree top walk through the rainforest canopy, or a night time wildlife safari with a national park guide.

The day starts early with breakfast in the guesthouse, then off to work at your project. Ghanaian builders tend to start work early so as to make the most of the cooler times of the day, and then in the hotter afternoons the time is used to plan for the next day and logistics re-supply etc.

Depending on your experience, needs and background, you will be allocated to a project that suits both yourself and the needs in Ghana. Each volunteer has the opportunity to talk to the Project Coordinator before they start their placement. He will ensure that you have a clear understanding of the needs of the projects and that you are fully prepared for your programme and life in Ghana.

All volunteers will stay in accommodation close to the building project. It is basic but clean and will have electricity and running water, though power cuts are normal. Most volunteer accommodation has a lady who will clean and prepare the meals and generally be there for help and to give advice. The meals are a mixture of Ghanaian and western cuisine and vegetarians can be catered for.

  • All of WAVA's placements are in partnership with recognised and established local organisations, run by or employing local people. These organisations, depending on the nature of what they do, might be small-scale NGOs, family projects, schools or orphanages, or local initiatives with environmental or social goals. We often use local businesses to provide logistical and support services to volunteers such as transfers, pick-ups, accommodation and so on. In this way, we support the local economy through helping independent local businesses to thrive. WAVA takes its partnerships very seriously and works extremely closely with all its partners. All WAVA partners are expected to abide by the WAVA Partnership Principles and Responsible Travel Policy. WAVA does not work with organisations with religious, ideological or political affiliations or goals
  • Comprehensive insurance is available for all programmes. Here are full details of our partnership with Endsleigh. You have no obligation to take up insurance with Endsleigh, but insurance of a suitable sort is mandatory on all our programmes
  • WAVA provides 24-hour emergency support from the UK and our partner provides support locally
  • WAVA has an agreement with the crisis management service Tranquillico, should the very worst situations arise
  • Participation on programmes with wild animals are at the volunteers' own risk; however, WAVA works only with partners who take all possible precautions to ensure volunteer safety
  • If any wider safety concerns arise in the destination, such as civil disturbances or natural disasters, we seek advice from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and implement their recommendations where appropriate
