Philippines

Philippines

A rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences.

The Philippines is a country made up of 7107 islands in South East Asia. Having been a Spanish colony for over 400 years, followed by a US colony, The Philippines has been heavily influenced by European and Western culture and traditions. This is visible in Filipino cuisine, music and their celebration of patron saint days and other local fiestas. Filipino people are very friendly and welcoming to tourists. They are also more than willing to speak to you in English and some in Spanish should you have any problems.

Money Tips

Approximate exchange rate
If you are travelling to The Philippines on a budget you can probably get by on as little as £10 per day, £15 if you want to stay in more comfortable accommodation and eat in restaurants from time to time. The easiest currency to change is the US dollar, though in the bigger cities it is also easy to change British pounds and Euros. Giving a small tip when eating in restaurants is common as well as when taking a taxi. Like in many South East Asian countries you should try to bargain prices down when shopping in the local markets.
