'Extreme' may be the word the best describes Chile. From the world driest deserts to fjords and icy lands, Chile offers a great chance to enjoy almost all climates and their traditional landscapes in one single country.

The north of the country has extremely arid climate features, very scant rainfall and spring-like temperatures almost year-round. The Atacama Desert is the driest in the world. It also boasts some of the clearest skies in the world, thus chosen as the site for many world-renowned observatories. In this region you can also find several beach resort areas with stunning clear, blue waters.

Going south, to Valle Central (Central Valley) you will find a place full of traditions closely linked to farming and agriculture such as the rodeo and harvest time festivities. The weather is very similar with the Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters.

The south - Sur (South) is home to the largest concentration of native Mapuche Indians. Here the endless mountains are covered in thick, sometimes impenetrable forests. Due to the heavy rainfall year-round, this zone has lush vegetation and offers snow-skiing from July through September. The lakes in this area are ideal spots for water sports.

And then, Patagonia… the region where Chile breaks up into archipelagoes, channels and fjords. The entire area features breath taking scenery which includes glaciers, towering peaks and fast-flowing rivers. The weather is extremely cold, windy and rainy.

Money Tips

Approximate exchange rate
Other currencies besides the Chilean Peso are not widely accepted, but most cities have exchange bureaux with reasonable rates on euros and US dollars. Never exchange money on the streets, specially if a "helper" indicates you to follow them. The automatic teller machine (ATM) network in Chile is respectable in coverage--they're all connected to the same service and enable standard transactions.
